Café The Lodge in South Bethlehem is not only a hard-working nonprofit that employs and empowers up to 18 individuals with mental health diagnoses to practice skills for independent living and competitive employment in the community. It’s not only a place to get delicious, freshly prepared food. It’s also a vibrant art space that features artwork from residents, staff, and community members, in exhibits that rotate throughout the year.
Café The Lodge’s “Artists in Recovery” exhibit began in January 2018, as a way to highlight the role of the arts as an important component of the therapeutic process it allows nonverbal expression of concepts or emotions that can be hard to vocalize. Accompanying the work are descriptions of how each artist utilized art as a coping skill or healing therapy in order to live fuller lives with their cognitive or mental health disorders. Visitors have the opportunity to directly support the artists and the café, as each piece is available for purchase: for each painting sold, the artist receives 85 percent of profits and the rest goes to support the programs at Café The Lodge.
